Traditional Uses: The American Indians used the Mexican Wild Yam for birth control.

Current Status: The Wild Yam contains a progesterone precursor. The progesterone precursors in the yam are used by the pharmaceutical industry to produce progesterone. However, there is no evidence that the human body can convert these substances into progesterone.

Precautions: Some wild yam creams contain progesterone as an additional ingredient, so you must read the label to see what you are getting.
